Hey, fellow mathers! Welcome to the podcast where Math is Figure-Out-Able! I'm Pam.

Kim  00:07

And I'm Kim.

Pam  00:08

And this episode is a MathStratChat episode where we chat about our math strategies. Every Wednesday evening, I throw out a math problem on social media, and people from around the world chat about the strategies they use, and comment on each other's thinking.

Kim  00:21

Okay, so this Wednesday, our math problem was 176 minus 99. How would you solve this problem? Pause the podcast. Solve it however you'd like. The problem is 176 minus 99.

Pam  00:34

I'm going first. Pick Me. Pick Me.

Kim  00:35

Okay. You can go first.

Pam  00:39

Okay, 176 minus 100 is 76. But that's a bit too much. I subtracted too much, so I have to adjust by giving you 1 back. And so, I think the answer is 77.

Kim  00:54

Well, since you did my favorite strategy, I'm going to use one of your favorites. And you've always been better at this than me. I'm going to shift those numbers up by 1. And so, I'm going to make the equivalent problem 177 minus 100. And I also got 77.

Pam  01:16

Nice. We better pop in one more just for fun.

Kim  01:20

Okay.

Pam  01:20

I think 176 is sixteen 11s.

Kim  01:26

Okay.

Pam  01:26

And I think 99 is nine 11s. So, sixteen 11s minus nine 11s is seven 11s, which is 77.

Kim  01:37

Which is special to me because 7/11 of 77 is my husband's birthday

Pam  01:43

Aww. That's kind of fun.

Kim  01:45

Yeah, it's cool. Nicely done.

Pam  01:47

Nice.

Kim  01:47

Excellent. Okay, well, we can't wait to see what you do each week. Join us on MathStratChat and let us know how you think about the problems. And comment on each other's strategies while you're there.

Pam  01:57
